Bergen Water Gardens is happy to celebrate it’s first ever PachydermFest . Early January is the typical blooming period for a beautiful orchid from Southeast Asia named Rhynchostylis gigantea. In Thailand, Rhynchostylis gigantea are frequently referred to as “elephants” as their flowers resemble an elephant’s trunk. Bergen Water Gardens grows seven different color variations of Rhynchostylis gigantea plus 7 different hybrids, with Rhynchostylis gigantea as a parent. The bonus with all these Ryncos are their spicy and potent fragrance.

The forecast for Saturday and Sunday January 10 and 11th is currently snow free and above freezing temperatures. Therefore we invite you to visit Bergen Water Gardens to enjoy our floral pachyderms. Sample Chinese tea, along with some elephant ears cookies as a snack ( Palmiers via Costco). Checkout our new orchid room and explore our ever growing selection of orchids from around the world. A special highlight to note is many of our Chinese Cymbidiums are starting to bloom!

Rhynchostylis gigantea are not simple houseplants that grow easily in Western New York. They grow best in a greenhouse or possibly a grow tent with bright light, high humidity and warm temperatures. Good air circulation is also essential. Ryncos are normally grown in slotted baskets but it is possible to grow them in pots with coarse orchid bark and charcoal. They generally need daily watering and weekly fertilizing is important. Overall, the hybrids of Rhynchostylis gigantea are easier to grow than the species.
