Bergen Water Gardens is honored to be designated as an International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society’s Certified Nelumbo Collection of Excellence. Lotus Paradise is the first garden to receive this distinction in the 37 year history of the IWGS. Over the past 5 years, Bergen Water Gardens has worked diligently to collect, import and grow one of the largest collections of lotus (Nelumbo) outside of China. To meet the IWGS’s Collection of Excellence, there must be a minimum of 75 varieties on lotus on display. We currently grow close to 400 varieties of Chinese lotus in 2019. Lotus Paradise continues to grow and expand each year. Flowering lotus will be our focus but we also grow seed lotus and edible lotus. Enjoy lotus from the very small micro lotus to the larger varieties towering over 6 feet tall! The story of Lotus Paradise.
By the summer of 2019:
- Look for a new Micro and Bowl Lotus display area.
- More 5′ x 5′ display lotus ponds will be constructed.
- A new program is starting to document the characteristics of each lotus variety.
- We will expand our aggressive hybridization program; to develop new lotus varieties.
