Intersubgeneric (ISG) waterlilies, specifically a blue hardy waterlily, has been the goal of waterlily hybridizers for the past 100 years. In the past decade, especially with the confirmation of the crosses via DNA testing, numerous people around the globe have been successful with ISG crosses. Simply stated, an intersubgeneric (ISG) waterlily results from a hardy waterlily crossed with a tropical waterlily. There are many other combinations possible by using night blooming waterlilies or Australian waterlilies. From these revolutionary  crosses, we expect many new, exciting waterlilies for our ponds and perhaps even the long sought blue hardy waterlily will appear!

Here are few examples of some ISG waterlilies you will find at Bergen Water Gardens:

N. ‘Purple Fantasy‘ is a new introduction from Florida Aquatic Nurseries for 2015. This new isg is a hardy, deep purple waterlily, with a bright yellow center. The  flower is 4 to 5 inches in diameter and is held high above the water. The pads are green. Note: This waterlily is Patent Pending and may not be propagated. N. ‘Siam Pink 2’ is a hybrid from Pairat Songpanich of Thailand. This is a good blooming waterlily.

N. ‘Siam Purple 1’ is a hybrid from Pairat Songpanich of Thailand. It has a great flower but seems to be a slow bloomer.

N. ‘Siam Purple 2‘ appears to be a vigorous bloomer. The flowers have lasted up to 5 days here in New York, This should be an exciting waterlily for the future. Hybridizer: Pairat Songpanich
